"Where Great Hunting Dogs Don't Happen By Accident"
OUR DOGS
Hi Cheryl,
Hi Mark,

Thought that I'd give you a quick "Maxx rundown". Maxx is now a little over 4 years old. I decided to treat a friend of mine, who
had dogsat for us while we went deer hunting, to a pheasant hunt at Big Cottonwood game ranch. We picked a day that Kath wasn't
working, so we left Lacey home with her and just took Maxx.  Maxx hadn't been on birds since mid February, so I wasn't quite sure
how rusty he would be. Benton released 10 pheasants for us and in less than 30 seconds into the field, Maxx went on point and
probably less than a minute into the hunt, we had our first rooster. I won't bore you guys with all of the details, but we finished up
shooting 12 pheasants. I love it when we find more birds than they release. Maxx's points were rock solid, his retrieves were pretty
good (there's still room for improvement on his retrieves), occasionally he'll want to continue hunting before he's completed the
retrieve). But for the first hunt of the year I was really happy. You probably remember all the hype that I've mentioned before
about my previous GSP, Roy, I always called him "the best there's ever been". My friend who hunted with me, Bill, told me "You've
never had a dog hunt any better than Maxx hunted today.", so that was quite a compliment, as he had hunted behind Roy many
times.

The following weekend, I took another friend (who had stopped by daily and played with the dogs while we were deer hunting) for
the same pheasant hunt. This guy had never hunted with a dog before, so what a treat he was in for. Benton again released 10
pheasant, but he told me that there had been a group hunting chukar the day before. We finished the day shooting 9 pheasant and 3
chukar. We would have hunted for the last pheasant but Maxx cut his tongue on the tall grass and had a mouth full of blood, so we
called it a day and tended to Maxx's tongue. I think that I had told you that Maxx opens the doors at home by himself, we have the
handle type door knobs and he puts his nose under the handle and pushes it up and then opens the door. He can do that with inward
or outward opening doors. Well, the highlight of my day came when we got home. I let Maxx out of the Jeep, he ran up to the
door, stopped, turned around and looked at me. I told him "Go on in". Maxx then turned around, opened the door and went into the
house. My buddy busted out laughing and said, "Your dog is amazing!". My buddy said that he never had any idea how easy it was to
hunt over a pointing dog and that he was shocked at how smart Maxx is. I believe that Maxx is hunting better at the beginning of
this season than he was when we finished hunting last year. Over the years, most of my dogs have needed to get a couple of hunts
under their belts before they really started to shine. So I am extremely happy.

Hope that both of you are doing well.

Take care,
Ken Johnson
